A Mother’s child is stolen by Death. The Mother madly pursues Death in an attempt to save her child’s life and in the process, encounters several characters, Night, a Thorn Bush, a Lake, an Old Woman at Death’s Greenhouse and finally, Death himself. She is made to surrender parts of herself on her journey to the various characters in order to find her child. At the conclusion, a little more than a shell of who she once was, The Mother is made to realize it is not her choice as to whether her child lives or dies. She says "Let God's will be done." As a result the child dies.
